05-26-05 Two day blackout...Other than financial losses, spoiled groceries, public transportation nightmares, hellacious commutes, profiteering by taxi drivers, walking up 15 flights (my favorite peeve), people trapped in elevators, some minor traffic accidents and traffic jams, water supply headaches, and reduced mobile phone service, everything passed reamrkably well in my neck of the woods. No train wrecks here, move along.

One of my co-workers loved this video and shared it with me. The part about slavery, books, and the commercial aspect of the entire "American experience" are portrayed in what is supposed to be a patriotic way, leaving little room for commentary about the state of American culture today.

05-17-05  Excerpt From "To One: I Love"

Scene IX by John Robles II

He had, for months, courted her, she, ever so coquettish, forever teasing him with the promise of love that his heart so longed for.

What had made it worse for the poor widower, who had already passed more than a decade in abject poverty trying alone to raise the offspring he had fathered with his one and only true love, practically unbearable in fact, was that she had allowed their relations to become as intimate as relations could become between a man and a woman. A fact she flaunted like a trollop when he had at last told her he had fallen in love with her, and used at her every convenience, treating him with the arrogant indifference one would normally expect to be directed at those considered beneath ones contempt.

Things were brought to a boil when he was made aware of her true feeling towards him. Having been directed by an unknown hand to a site where unbeknownst to her he was able to eavesdrop on her.

He then communicated with her in an anonymous manner, playing the role of newfound suitor, and was mortified by her public jokes relating to his handling of his wedding ring, which he handled, he had thought stealthily, with sentimental fondness as it was the only thing he had to remember his dead wife and the promise he had made to her when she had placed it on his finger all those years ago.

On said occasion he broke cover and typed the following note: Aren't we rather; overly pleased and contemptuous in our smug and arrogant derision of a poor widowed suitor. Reprehensible is your snide and caustic remark, bile-inducing in its entirety.

She did not reply, what could she say? She had been caught red-handed.

05-16-05  Something went wrong with my Internet connection so we have been off-line for two days. They said the junction box on the roof was to blame. Sorry for the inconvenience perhaps someone could donate a mirror. I Called the ISP for more info but the gentleman who answered the phone does not know exactly what happened... He said he will know more when the service people return to the office...

Capítulo I

Venient annis saecula seris.
Quibus Oceanus vincula rerum
Laxet, novosque Tiphis delegat orbes,

WHO: Hyundai Motor America ("Hyundai"), Cingular Wireless ("Cingular"), and a taskforce composed of national, community-based, student, and grassroots organizations assembled to address the racially derogatory on-air statements made by radio hosts Craig Carton and Ray Rossi of New Jersey 101.5 FM, parent company Millennium Radio Group ("Millennium").
WHAT: In a statement issued May 6, 2005, Hyundai has withdrawn its advertising from NJ 101.5 WKXW FM. "Hyundai Motor America shares the outrage of many in the Asian and general communities about the racial slurs made on radio station WKXW on the 'The Jersey Guys' show on April 25, 2005... the company is deeply offended by the program and would never want to be associated with insensitive statements that reflect negatively on the Korean and Asian communities." The Star Ledger reports that Cingular pulled its advertising immediately after the incident, said a Cingular spokesperson.
On April 25, 2005, radio hosts Craig Carton and Ray Rossi of NJ 101.5 FM (a.k.a. "The Jersey Guys") made racially derogatory statements against the Asian Pacific American community including Americans of Arab, Chinese, Indian, and Korean descent. Mr. Carton referred to Asian Pacific Americans as "foreigners" and "fringe groups" that "should never dictate the outcome of an American election;" and as "Damn Orientals and Indians." Mr. Carton also said "I dont like the fact that [Asians] crowd the goddamn black jack tables in Atlantic City ... ching chong, ching chong, ching chong [mimics an Asian accent] hehe you hit it on 17 you stupid b**ch..." and other bigoted statements.
A task force composed of elected officials and community leaders from the NJ/NY metropolitan region and across the nation has formed to address the statements made by Carton and Rossi. Alaska Town Won't See Sunset for Months
Tue May 10, 2:05 PM ET
BARROW - When the sun rises Tuesday in the continent's northernmost community, it will stay up for nearly three months. The last sunset of the season occurs at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday. The sun rises again at 2:56 a.m.
"Then it will stay above the horizon until Aug. 2, when the first sunset will take place at 3:09 a.m.," said Gina Sturm of the
National Weather Service office in Barrow.
The prospects for seeing a spectacular sunrise are slim because of the potential for cloudy skies and patchy fog, said Dave Stricklan, also with the National Weather Service.
"I'd say it is about 80 percent `no' on seeing the sun that time of the morning," he said.
Still, many in this town of about 4,500 welcome the transition to the midnight sun.
"It is so energizing after being in the dark during winter," said lifetime resident Diane Martin. "It's almost like coming out of hibernation. It brings us back to getting out and about, and participating in our subsistence activities."
Rob Carillo, who has lived in Barrow for two years, said he feels the surge of energy too.
"It's great," he said. "It gives me a lot more energy than when the sun stays down. During winter I sleep more, and eat more. ... Now I'm staying a lot more active."
Ron Boynton, who's been in Barrow 23 years, said in some ways he likes the dark period more than the unrelenting daylight.
"You have to get some little tricks to get enough sleep," he said. "Put foil on your bedroom windows, etcetera, but then if you have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom or something, then you get the full sunlight coming in, and it can be hard to get back to sleep.
"So we all learn to adapt during the years, and each develop our own little tricks.
Barrow is about 330 miles above the Arctic Circle. In winter, the sun sets in mid-November and the region is dark until late January.
Dog kills cat, court awards owner $45,000
Tue May 10,12:07 PM ET
SEATTLE (Reuters) - A woman who sued a neighbor after her cat was mauled by his dog was awarded more than $45,000, the Seattle woman's lawyer said on Monday.
Paula Roemer's cat Yofi was killed after her neighbor's dog broke through a fence in February 2004. The dog's owner, Wallace Gray, had pleaded guilty to animal-control violations in Seattle Municipal Court and admitted negligence.
Seattle District Court Judge Barbara Linde ordered Gray to pay Roemer a little over $45,000 for Yofi's death, including $30,000 for the value of the cat, $15,000 for emotional distress, and other charges.
Roemer's lawyer, Adam Karp, who specializes in animal cases, said that while multimillion-dollar judgments have been awarded over thoroughbred horses, her award was the highest for a pet in the United States that he was aware of. Roemer has said she would donate the money to animal welfare groups.
Brazil police confiscate guns from Iraqis at summit
Tue May 10,12:06 PM ET
BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Brazilian police confiscated four pistols from an Iraqi security team on Monday when they arrived in Brasilia for the South American-Arab summit.
A federal police spokesman said the security agents did not have permission from Brazilian authorities to carry the Glock 9 mm guns. The agents were accompanying
Iraq's new president, Jalal Talabani, who is making his first trip abroad to attend the summit of 12 South American and 22 Arab leaders.
The Iraqis will ask the Foreign Ministry for the return of the guns, the spokesman added.
Thousands of troops are guarding the streets of the Brazilian capital in the biggest show of armed force since the end of military rule in 1985.
Security chief General Jorge Armando Felix said the Iraqi and Palestinian delegations would however receive special treatment because of the possibility of an attack against them.
"Terrorism is part of our worry. For our security plan, we are working on the possibility of this type of action," he said.
Microsoft Unveils New Windows Mobile
By BRUCE MEYERSON, AP Business Writer Tue May 10, 2:04 PM ET
NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp. unveiled Tuesday a new version of its Windows operating system for mobile devices that adds such features as PowerPoint viewing while making it easier for gadget makers to equip phones and handheld computers with typewriter keyboards and iPod-sized hard drives.
Windows Mobile 5.0, introduced by Chairman
Bill Gates at the company's annual conference for mobile software developers in Las Vegas, also marks an about-face in marketing by eliminating the distinct Pocket PC and Smartphone brands of the operating system.
Other feature enhancements include updates to the mobile versions of Microsoft Word and Excel that better maintain the formatting of documents created on a computer and allow charts to be created from a spreadsheet.
The elimination of the five-year-old Pocket PC brand for PDAs and the separate Smartphone label puts Windows Mobile on the same page as rival mobile device platforms such as Symbian and BlackBerry.
It also marks another change of course in Microsoft's long-evolving strategy to extend the dominance of its Windows computer platform to mobile devices.
Those efforts began with a single platform based on Windows CE, short for consumer electronics, but then fragmented into three custom-made flavors: Pocket PC organizers, "smart" cell phones, and then Pocket PCs equipped with phones.
While the underlying software code for those platforms remain about 90 percent identical, Microsoft has now decided to emphasize the familiar Windows name.
But beyond separate brand names, the new Windows Mobile does remove certain technological distinctions that gave the phone and PDA platforms different capabilities.
One of these is integrated support for Wi-Fi short-range wireless connections, now available for smart phones rather than just Pocket PCs. Another is so-called "persistent" memory storage, which preserves basic user information, contacts and personal settings when a device's battery runs out of power. This capability was previously available for smart phones but not Pocket PCs.
The updated version of Mobile Windows also serves as another example of Microsoft seeking to barge into a hot new sector where it's late to the party much as it responded to the Netscape Navigator Web browser with Internet Explorer and to the Palm Pilot with Pocket PC.
This time, by adding support for internal hard drives, Microsoft is enabling device makers to design phones and organizers with enough storage capacity to compete in the portable music player market dominated by the iPod from Apple Computer Inc.
Windows Mobile accounts for a tiny fraction of Microsoft's business. Combined, software revenue from mobile and embedded devices, such as auto dash systems, and totaled $80 million in the first three months of 2005. That was up 31 percent from a year earlier, but amounted to less than a tenth of Microsoft's overall revenue for the quarter.

CT Scans Show What King Tut Looked Like   PHOTOS
By MAAMOUN YOUSSEF, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago
CAIRO, Egypt - The first facial reconstructions of King Tutankhamun based on CT scans of his mummy have produced images strikingly similar to the boy pharaoh's ancient portraits, with one model showing a baby-faced young man with chubby cheeks and his family's characteristic overbite.
That model, a photo of which was released Tuesday, bears a strong resemblance to the gold mask of King Tut found in his tomb in 1922 by the British excavation led by Howard Carter.
The beardless youth depicted in the model, created by a French team, has soft features, a sloping nose and a weak chin and the overbite, which archaeologists have long believed was a trait shared by other kings in Tut's 18th dynasty. His eyes are highlighted by thick eyeliner.
Three teams of forensic artists and scientists from France, the United States and Egypt each built a model of the boy pharaoh's face based on some 1,700 high-resolution photos from CT scans of his mummy to reveal what he looked like the day he died nearly 3,300 years ago.
"The shape of the face and skull are remarkably similar to a famous image of Tutankhamun as a child where he was shown as the sun god at dawn rising from a lotus blossom," said Zahi Hawass, secretary-general of the Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.
The CT scans the first done on an Egyptian mummy have suggested King Tut was a healthy, yet slightly built 19-year-old, standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall at the time of his death.
The three teams created their reconstructions separately the Americans and French working from a plastic skull, the Egyptians working directly from the CT scans, which could distinguish different densities of soft tissue and bone.
The French and Egyptians knew they were recreating King Tut, but the Americans were not even told where the skull was from and correctly identified it as a Caucasoid North African, the council said in a statement.
"The results of the three teams were identical or very similar in the basic shape of the face, the size, shape and setting of the eyes, and the proportion of the skull," Hawass said.
The French and American models, seen in photos released by the council, are similar with the Americans' plaster model sharing the more realistic, French silicone version's receding chin and prominent upper lip. The Egyptian reconstruction has a more prominent nose and a stronger jaw and chin.
The scans were carried out on Jan. 5 in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, where Tut's leathery mummy was briefly removed from its tomb and placed into a portable CT scanner.
The tests provided an unprecedented look at Egypt's most famous mummy but they did not resolve the mystery of the death of King Tut, who came to power at age 9.
They were able to dismiss a long held theory that Tut, who died around 1323 B.C., was murdered by a blow to his skull or killed in an accident that crushed his chest. It raised a new possibility for the cause of death: Some experts on the scanning team said it appeared Tut broke his left thigh severely puncturing his skin just days before his death, and the break could have caused an infection.
The life of Tutankhamun believed to have been the 12th ruler of ancient Egypt's 18th dynasty has fascinated people since his tomb was discovered in 1922, revealing a trove of fabulous treasures in gold and precious stones that showed the wealth and craftsmanship of the pharaonic court.
A U.S. museum tour a quarter-century ago of Tut's treasures drew more than 8 million people. A smaller number of treasures minus Tut's famous gold mask will again go on display in the United States starting June 16 in Los Angeles, after touring Germany and Switzerland.
The decision to allow the exhibit was a reversal of an Egyptian policy set in the 1980s that confined most of the objects to Egypt, after several pieces were damaged on international tour.
Hawass is leading a five-year project to scan all of Egypt's known mummies including royal mummies now exhibited at the Cairo Museum. Eventually, each mummy will be displayed alongside CT images and a facial reconstruction.
"For the first time, we will make these dead mummies come alive," Hawass said.

Victory Day Poem

In Memory of the Perished

With stalwart determination, thrust onto the battlefield,

They lived and fought and died, wounds that have never healed.

To thwart an infestation, borne from the bowels of hell,

So bravely fought with pride, so many millions fell,

Against evil deviation, fascisms evil creed,

Born in the minds of men, blood letting wert their need.

Such blasphemous devastation, wrought on this land of ours,

Must neer be allowed again, to exist under the stars.

So bravely did they perish, their ultimate sacrifice,

We must never forget, or we will pay the price.

Their memory we must cherish, pass down into the ages,

Bowed head with deep regret, as time turns its drab pages.

And everything around you, at once you know its true

And all that we can see, we owe it all to you.

Thanks must be given unto, you Veterans one and all,

Because of you were free, you brought fascisms fall.

And in my humble way: Ive nothing else to give.

I try to scribe this poem, for the land where I do live.

In memory of this day; Your lives are gone forever

Your ghosts forever roam, our tears would fill a river.

And as you banished evil, forever we must strive

Never to forget, because of you, we are, alive

Not only did our people defend their Motherland, they also saved the world from Nazism and liberated eleven European countries.

The courage, steadfastness and unity of the multiethnic people was the main force that destroyed Nazism, President Vladimir Putin said at an opening ceremony for a war memorial at Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow.

Our people will always remember and honour the achievement of the generation of victors who defended the right to live, have their own statehood and culture, and fought to give a future to their children.

The heroic deeds and achievements of this generation will always be a moral beacon and the grateful memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War will be handed down from generation to generation.

QUOTES

"Our aim is not to destroy all armed force in Germany, because any intelligent man will understand that this is as impossible in the case of Germany as in the case of Russia. It would be unreasonable on the part of the victor to do so. To destroy Hitler's army is possible and necessary."
-Josef Stalin

"The League of Nations is still strong enough by its collective actions to avert or arrest aggression... There is no room for bargaining or compromise."
- Foreign Commissar Litvinoff (September 21, 1938)

"This war is not an ordinary war. It is the war of the entire Russian people. Not only to eliminate the danger hanging over our heads, but to aid all people groaning under the yoke of Fascism."
- Josef Stalin (June 22, 1941)

"Oh merciful lord crown our effort with victory and give us faith in the inevitable power of light over darkness, of justice over evil and brutal force Of the cross of Christ over the Fascist swastika so be it, amen."
- Sergei, Archbishop of Moscow (November 27, 1941)

"For the burned cities and villages; for the deaths of our children and our mothers; for the torture and humiliation of our people; I swear revenge upon the enemy I swear that I would rather die in battle with the enemy then surrender myself my people and my country to the Fascist invaders. Blood for blood! Death for death!"
- Russian War Oath

"We secured peace for our country for one and a half years, as well as an opportunity of preparing our forces for defense if fascist Germany risked attacking our country in defiance of the pact. This was a definite gain to our country and a loss for fascist Germany."
- Josef Stalin  (July 3, 1941, speaking about the non-aggression pact between the USSR and Germany made in 1939)

"The situation of your troops is desperate. They are suffering from hunger, sickness and cold. The cruel winter has scarcely begun. Hard frosts, cold winds and blizzards still lie ahead. Your soldiers are unprovided with winter clothing and are living in appalling sanitary conditions. Your situation is hopeless, and any further resistance senseless."
- General Rokossovski (on a note to the 6th Army trapped in Stalingrad)

"All that the Great Lenin created we have lost forever!"

May 1, 2005 Dear Members and Supporters,
On April 15, 2005, radio hosts Craig Carton and Ray Rossi of NJ 101.5 FM stated that Asian Pacific Americans are "Damn Orientals and Indians," spoke in "ching chong ching chong" mock Asian gibberish, and made other defamatory statements towards the Asian Pacific American community and New Jersey mayoral candidate Jun Choi. Pleasejoin our campaign to hold NJ 101.5 FM radio and its parent company Millennium Radio Group fully accountable for their on-air racist
propaganda and for their past history of bigotry and hate speech in which they stated that people with mental illness "they must be crazy in the first place," and that they would burn down the homes of recovery patients, preferable with them in it, and shoot recovering
patients in the head.

Asian Media Watch is proud to be a member and supporter of the Coalition Against Hate Media (CAHM) formed in directed response to the Hot 97 "Tsunami Song." As a result of our efforts, and the efforts of many other elected officials, community leaders, and activists, we have achieved results in the Emmis Communications/Hot 97 incident: - Termination of producer Rick Del Gado and host Todd Lynn - Donation of $1 million to tsunami relief - Suspensions of employees - Public statements of apology - Lost advertisers and revenue However, these important accomplishments are not enough. CAHM is working towards long-term solutions that include education; positive changes in business practices; additional terminations and more to ensure that media companies are held fully accountable for producing hate-based programming We hope you will join us in our latest campaign to hold media companies such as Hot 97 and NJ 101.5 fully accountable for promoting bigotry and hatred.

04-27-04 POEM to One I Love

Impressario by John Robles II

I couldn't help but cry a tear

With lovers heart I live in fear,

To hear your voice so distant, gone

I strove to voice a happy song...

But if the demons of the night

With whom I am in endless fight...

Would try to take my love away,

Then for myself I've this to say,

I love you.

I love you.

As winter's cold leaves this stark land,

And summer gets the upper hand,

Attempt to come up with scenarios,

More worthy of the impresarios,

Who just play games to win the heart,

My love is true I thus impart.

And if these words can not explain,

The depths of love I feel. Disdain!

I love you.

I love you.

As mountain spring loves shady nook,

And yarn requires the weavers hook,

So too am I in want of thee,

As is the squirrel of the great tree,

My love sings true polyphony.

And in so doing courts to thee.

So as I put down humble pen,

Im emboldened to repeat again.

I love you

I love you.
